Description of Dissemination Event:world food day through experiments
Outcomes and Results:The children from group IVA at kindergarten № 149 “Zornitsa”, Sofia and their teacher Mrs Veselina Todorova joined the HealthEDU project activities by celebrating the World Food Day with several interesting experiments. First the children and their teacher prepared themselves by obtaining the necessary materials (available in every kitchen) – photos 1 through 4. The experiments that followed were: Experiment 1: Lava in a cup Materials – a transparent water glass; ¼ cup of oil; 1 tea spoonful salt; water; food dye. What they did: “We filled the glass with water up to ¾. Then we added the food dye (blue – the group’s favorite colour). To the coloured water we slowly added the oil. We noticed how it separated itself from the water and floated on top. Now came the fun part. We put some salt in the glass and now the bubbles of lava started appearing and moving up and down in the glass. If we want to keep this effect visible for longer, we have to add more salt.” Experiment 2: Tornado in a bottle Materials – water; a 1.5 liter bottle without any stickers or labels on it; small shiny particles for example brocade; some dish washing substance. What they did: “We filled the bottle with water almost to the top. We put 10-12 drops of the dishwashing substance in the bottle. We added the brocade, which would help the tornado to be more visible. We closed the bottle tight with the cap. We turned the bottle upside down and shook it with circular movements for about 10 seconds. Now look inside the bottle – can you see the small tornado.” Experiment 3: How to divide salt from black pepper? Materials – salt; black pepper; plastic spoon; a piece of woolen tissue. What they did: “We spread salt and black pepper on a plate. We mixed them well together. We rubbed the plastic spoon on the wool and then placed it near to the salt and pepper mixture. By magic the small pepper particles flew up and stuck on the spoon.“ Experiment 4: Dancing rice. Materials – raw rice; a spoon of food dye; a cup or jar with water; vinegar; bicarbonate of soda What they did: “We placed a spoonful of soda in the water and we stirred. Then we added some rice. Then we poured a spoonful of vinegar. The rice started dancing and jumping. Some food dye or acrylics can be added for more beauty.”
